Trapping is the survivalist's force multiplier. It hunts while you sleep. However, it requires a deep understanding of animal behavior and a strict adherence to ethical necessity.
The Figure-4 Deadfall
This trap uses a heavy rock or log to crush the prey. It is humane because it kills instantly if set correctly.
- Pros: Requires only a knife and natural materials.
- Cons: Difficult to trigger finely; often misfires.
The Paiute Deadfall
A more advanced version of the Figure-4 that uses a piece of string or cordage for the trigger mechanism. It is infinitely more sensitive and faster than the Figure-4.
Snare Wire
A simple loop of wire placed on a game trail. As the animal walks through, the noose tightens.
Funneling
Animals are lazy. They follow the path of least resistance. Use sticks and debris to block off wide paths and "funnel" the animal toward your trap. A snare without a funnel is just a piece of wire in the woods.
The Code of the Trapper
Never set a trap unless you are in a genuine survival situation where life is at risk. Indiscriminate trapping is cruel, illegal, and damaging to the ecosystem.
